Furnado Animal Shelter; Tuesday [08/26].

Prompto usually came in to do his work at the animal shelter on Wednesday, sure, but there was no way he would have missed the chance to celebrate a good number of Furnado's denizens on National Dog Day! Sorry, cats! But today was all about those good old boys, those peppy puppers, the delightful doggos, and Prompto, as a big canine fan himself (he'd even actually been one several times!), was going to go all out.

They had a big old banner outside and there was a big old dog-friendly cake, plenty of treats and toys and anything he could think of to celebrate dogs for their day, while giving copious amounts of apologies to the cats and promises to do the same when their day came around in October (which was close to his birthday, too, so that was cool, right?), and, besides, didn't they pretty much have every Caturday? It wouldn't hurt to give their other furry brethren a bit of a special day, right?

Right!

Also, puppies wearing party hats was a good reason to do anything, really, if you asked him!

Atlas Gym; Tuesday [08/26].

When Gladio saw a Musical Yoga class on the schedule for that day, he almost considered dropping in on it. It made, he supposed, some sense; he kind of liked the quiet connection with the world when he did yoga, but he could see how maybe some soft music, some nice calming classical or new age stuff could help people with their forms and meditation.

The thumping metal music that was spilling from the classroom door once they got started, though? That, he was a little less sure of, but then he remembered his last yoga instructor here on the island, and it made a little more sense.

He did check in to see if Diaz actually had stopped in to teach this particular musical yoga lesson, but alas, it was just some gremlin with some surprisingly impressive headbanging hair (did they even grow hair?) at the head of the class this time.

Not exactly what he'd have gone with for the concept, but, hey, if it worked for them, it worked for them.

Luke's Diner; Tuesday [08/26].

Ignis had to admit: some of his favorite days here at the diner were the days when he came in to discover that there was an influx in a certain ingredient, be it by ordering blunder or random chance, because there were few things he enjoyed quite as much as turning cooking into a puzzle to be solved. To take a particular ingredient and figure out interesting ways to come up with new recipehs and try different things. Or stick to improving classic staples. Or take something familiar and turn it just a little one way or another.

The challenge was fun, and the results were usually exceptional, and so, with that, once he'd gotten his coffee made, he settled in to figure out some new and interesting ways to bring miso, specifically, to the specials board today.

It helped, as well, that he'd had a very productive weekend filled with promising prospective for the new Ravnica property filled with robust negotiations...and excellent kitchen spaces.

Hey there, Fandom! What up, it's me, ya girl Arden Finch, bringing you the very abbreviated news of the day. How does that old saying go? No School, no Dorms, no service? Something like that.

Anyway, since we just have Town I'm gonna knock these few notes out and enjoy a little more time on the beach! September is almost here, who knows how many more beach days we'll have! We start off with Henry in the park yesterday morning, where he tripped and fell and...disappeared. Okay. Glad to see that even with very few notes, we can still get a couple of weird ones in there. Anyway, Henry, hope you're safe and that we'll see you soon! In far more explicable news, Professor Vess was working on something at the Infinite Consortium. Hard hitting journalism there, squirrels. Yeah, she was working. At work. Shocking. Doc Harley woke up and went on a cleaning spree, and then wandered around town a bit, stopping in at Ink & Holes to ask about laser removal. Vi was feeling a bit down at the Magpie Emporium, and Officer McGarrett was fielding calls about beer at the Trooper Station. Wait, like, drunk driving or something? Drunk and disorderly? Drunk and--oh. Nope. Just somebody with really strong opinions about IPAs. Ooookaaaay. And it sounds like there was a full on musical performance and/or possible drag show at the Clinic. The notes don't specify, so I think the performer is Stabby and not Professor James Stark, but I can't actually say for sure either way... The streets were particularly feline forward today, with Remy's cats adopting another trio of lost kitties. I guess we should all just be glad that...

Mississippi legal challenge: beginning 1 September, we will need to geoblock Mississippi IPs

I'll start with the tl;dr summary to make sure everyone sees it and then explain further: As of September 1, we will temporarily be forced to block access to Dreamwidth from all IP addresses that geolocate to Mississippi for legal reasons. This block will need to continue until we either win the legal case entirely, or the district court issues another injunction preventing Mississippi from enforcing their social media age verification and parental consent law against us.

Mississippi residents, we are so, so sorry. We really don't want to do this, but the legal fight we and Netchoice have been fighting for you had a temporary setback last week. We genuinely and honestly believe that we're going to win it in the end, but the Fifth Circuit appellate court said that the district judge was wrong to issue the preliminary injunction back in June that would have maintained the status quo and prevented the state from enforcing the law requiring any social media website (which is very broadly defined, and which we definitely qualify as) to deanonymize and age-verify all users and obtain parental permission from the parent of anyone under 18 who wants to open an account.

Netchoice took that appellate ruling up to the Supreme Court, who declined to overrule the Fifth Circuit with no explanation -- except for Justice Kavanaugh agreeing that we are likely to win the fight in the end, but saying that it's no big deal to let the state enforce the law in the meantime.

Needless to say, it's a big deal to let the state enforce the law in the meantime. The Mississippi law is a breathtaking state overreach: it forces us to verify the identity and age of every person who accesses Dreamwidth from the state of Mississippi and determine who's under the age of 18 by collecting identity documents, to save that highly personal and sensitive information, and then to obtain a permission slip from those users' parents to allow them to finish creating an account. It also forces us to change our moderation policies and stop anyone under 18 from accessing a wide variety of legal and beneficial speech because the state of Mississippi doesn't like it -- which, given the way Dreamwidth works, would mean blocking people from talking about those things at all. (And if you think you know exactly what kind of content the state of Mississippi doesn't like, you're absolutely right.)

Needless to say, we don't want to do that, either. Even if we wanted to, though, we can't: the resources it would take for us to build the systems that would let us do it are well beyond our capacity. You can read the sworn declaration I provided to the court for some examples of how unworkable these requirements are in practice. (That isn't even everything! The lawyers gave me a page limit!)

Unfortunately, the penalties for failing to comply with the Mississippi law are incredibly steep: fines of $10,000 per user from Mississippi who we don't have identity documents verifying age for, per incident -- which means every time someone from Mississippi loaded Dreamwidth, we'd potentially owe Mississippi $10,000. Even a single $10,000 fine would be rough for us, but the per-user, per-incident nature of the actual fine structure is an existential threat. And because we're part of the organization suing Mississippi over it, and were explicitly named in the now-overturned preliminary injunction, we think the risk of the state deciding to engage in retaliatory prosecution while the full legal challenge continues to work its way through the courts is a lot higher than we're comfortable with. Mississippi has been itching to issue those fines for a while, and while normally we wouldn't worry much because we're a small and obscure site, the fact that we've been yelling at them in court about the law being unconstitutional means the chance of them lumping us in with the big social media giants and trying to fine us is just too high for us to want to risk it. (The excellent lawyers we've been working with are Netchoice's lawyers, not ours!)

All of this means we've made the extremely painful decision that our only possible option for the time being is to block Mississippi IP addresses from accessing Dreamwidth, until we win the case. (And I repeat: I am absolutely incredibly confident we'll win the case. And apparently Justice Kavanaugh agrees!) I repeat: I am so, so sorry. This is the last thing we wanted to do, and I've been fighting my ass off for the last three years to prevent it. But, as everyone who follows the legal system knows, the Fifth Circuit is gonna do what it's gonna do, whether or not what they want to do has any relationship to the actual law.

We don't collect geolocation information ourselves, and we have no idea which of our users are residents of Mississippi. (We also don't want to know that, unless you choose to tell us.) Because of that, and because access to highly accurate geolocation databases is extremely expensive, our only option is to use our network provider's geolocation-based blocking to prevent connections from IP addresses they identify as being from Mississippi from even reaching Dreamwidth in the first place. I have no idea how accurate their geolocation is, and it's possible that some people not in Mississippi might also be affected by this block. (The inaccuracy of geolocation is only, like, the 27th most important reason on the list of "why this law is practically impossible for any site to comply with, much less a tiny site like us".)

If your IP address is identified as coming from Mississippi, beginning on September 1, you'll see a shorter, simpler version of this message and be unable to proceed to the site itself. If you would otherwise be affected, but you have a VPN or proxy service that masks your IP address and changes where your connection appears to come from, you won't get the block message, and you can keep using Dreamwidth the way you usually would.

On a completely unrelated note while I have you all here, have I mentioned lately that I really like ProtonVPN's service, privacy practices, and pricing? They also have a free tier available that, although limited to one device, has no ads or data caps and doesn't log your activity, unlike most of the free VPN services out there. VPNs are an excellent privacy and security tool that every user of the internet should be familiar with! We aren't affiliated with Proton and we don't get any kickbacks if you sign up with them, but I'm a satisfied customer and I wanted to take this chance to let you know that.

Again, we're so incredibly sorry to have to make this announcement, and I personally promise you that I will continue to fight this law, and all of the others like it that various states are passing, with every inch of the New Jersey-bred stubborn fightiness you've come to know and love over the last 16 years. The instant we think it's less legally risky for us to allow connections from Mississippi IP addresses, we'll undo the block and let you know.

FANDOM'S 20TH ANNIVERSARY!

Hey folks!

Next week, the game is turning 20. Yeah, seriously. It's like five minutes from graduating college itself. How the hell did that happen?

In order to celebrate this momentuous occasion, we present BLAST FROM THE PAST WEEK! This kicks off on Monday, September 1st and lasts all the way up until Sunday.

Throughout this week, Fandom will be feeling nostalgic - and so will be exposing current characters to memories of events past. Your character may, during the week, run into 1) replays of events that your character has been a part of while on the island; 2) replays of on-island events that your past characters have been a part of and 3) replays of on-island events where you've received permission from the original player of the character to see something that they went through on-island.

We do ask that if your replay involves someone else's character in any way, you check in with that character's player before using it. We don't want anyone getting any information about characters their players wouldn't want them to have. Beyond that, though, these replays will be physically visible (if non-interactable) events, so anyone who's in the scene with you will also relive it! Consider this an excuse to go diving through old posts and beloved threads. (Though we do, again, ask you all to be mindful of other players' characters and not use this to give your character an unfair advantage over anyone. It's meant to be fun.)

This memory event will stir up the island's own memories, too. And that means that every. single. day this week, Fandomites are going to have to deal with weird events and invasions from Fandom's past. Here's what you can expect:

Schedule:
Monday, September 1st
EVENT: Everyone Has A Flavor Day - originally done for our 7th anniversary, this event makes every person on the island taste like something, whether it be matcha ice cream or bees.
Tuesday, September 2nd
EVENT: NO CURSING! From this day on until the end of the week, characters will be unable to curse. Also, characters wake up wearing flower crowns - or fierce hats.
Wednesday, September 3rd
INVASION: Snow monsters invade! They will attack all day, then melt by evening.
EVENT: Adults across the island turn into teenagers. Hope you still know how to fight!
Thursday, September 4th
INVASION: Dinosaurs! Yes, it's the return of the angry dinosaurs.
EVENT: Pony Day. Everyone turns into a pony. That's it.
Friday, September 5th
INVASION: Alligators that spit goldfish roam the lands. Yeah, we didn't understand it the first time, either.
EVENT: The entire island suddenly operates on Looney Tunes physics! The gremlins of Fandom decide to use this to shoot their shot and get extra active this day.
Saturday, September 6th
INVASION: Fandom gets hit by a glizzard, a whirling storm of glitter. The storm creates a dangerous sharknado! ... Just with dwarf sharks, instead of the really scary ones. Also, angry disco balls roll around the island.
Sunday, September 7th
INVASION: Jack O' Lanterns spawn across the island! As do zombie bunnies, out for their braaaains. Better not get between the two.
EVENT: Polar bears with Coke. Their timing could be better.

Have fun, and let us know if you have any questions! Naturally, any event that directly affects a character is optional, so if you don't want your character to get a flower crown or to turn into a teenager, you do not have to go along with it. Just have fun!

Out and about around Fandom, Tuesday afternoon

Lucifer (the cat), Oliver, and Figaro had been living on the island more than long enough no to feel like they pretty well owned the place. Midnight was, after some wordless debate, willing to let them roam so long as they always came home at the end of the day and didn't try to hunt too much native fauna (or adopted fauna, leave that porg alone, Oliver!). Which was nice, since there were only so many different ways that a trio of cats used to occasionally zapping around the galaxy with other superhero pets could entertain themselves in a rented room, even one that could shift endlessly to suit their needs.

Which was all to say, Lucifer (the cat), Oliver, and Figaro were On the Prowl.

(And anyway, Oliver was just playing with that porg! They're friends, okay?)

They swung by the racoon brewery, wandered through the radio station, and were now headed down Godiva on the trail of an elusive gremlin when they happened across a few felines who clearly were not simply kings of their own island, but maybe needed a bit of guidance.

And thus did Remy LeBeau's hoard of cats expand -- temporarily -- by 100%. Remy would be utterly bemused to discover the three extra felines curling up on the cat tree when he got home this evening, but that one cat especially just looked so pathetic, how could he turn them away?

In the meantime, well. That porg was not having its best day.

[I mean, mostly I am just amused by superhero pets going adventuring. But yes, also this can be open. Especially to other island animals!]

Stabby was not tired at all. Stabby appeared to be working on his dance routine from last week only with costumes now. There were sequins involved. There were also some lobster-shaped (Stark thought) costumes off to the side. Maybe Amaya's lobsters were planning a visit? Or maybe Stabby was. Who could say? Not Stark. He wasn't asking.

Stark just kind of stared and drank his coffee.

The clinic was open, the crab was sparkly and dancing, and the alien was in and tired.

Fall 2025 Class Sign-Ups!

Good morning/afternoon/evening everyone! It's time to sign up for your Fall 2025 Classes! These sign-ups are for EVERYONE: students, teachers, and townies. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY. Please read the following before you start signing up:

1) Teacher and Student Class Expectations! The all important guideline for what is expected of the players in Fandom High. Please give it a once-over even if you've seen it in some form or other before - consider it a good thing to click and read while I put up the OCD!

2) Japanese characters, please sign up in the Western style - given name, then family name - to make our alphabetical OCDing easier.

The Important Stuff About Signing Up For Classes

1) Since we've removed the cap on characters, we have also removed the cap on the number of classes your characters can sign up for, but please consider your RL ability to keep up before chucking a character at every class we're offering.

2) If it's OOC for your character to take a class but you really want to take it anyway, just sign them up and we'll pretend it was an IG paperwork mishap. "Blame the moose" has been working for years!

3) If you sign up, please, please try to show up. It lets the mods judge if you're still in the game and it makes the work the teachers are putting into coming up with something fun to interact with so worth it.

4) Class descriptions are subject to change at the teacher's discretion.

5) To be fair to people in all time zones, sign-ups are not first-come, first-serve.

And now we get to what you really want to see: Fall Classes!!!!

FH class sign-ups will close at 11:59pm Eastern on Saturday, August 30th, and are IG knowledge at the Welcome Picnic.

General FYI: Feel free to make changes to your class choices as long as you do it before the deadline. We use the final pings in each thread to make the class lists, not the email notifs. Questions or difficulties, please email us - fandomhighadmins (@) iambicnut.com - or drop a question in the Questions thread down below.
